Marikes #notfamouspeople

May 2024, Athens

The play “Marikes #notfamouspeople” highlights the everyday experiences of women, in Greek patriarchal society. On stage, five women come together: they listen, speak, agree, disagree, self-mock, support—each other—play, build, hide, pave paths, help, laugh, fall, and get up; they continue.

The actors bring to life the words and experiences of women interviewed from various parts of Greece, placing these stories within a space “under construction” that feels unfamiliar and cold. They do not settle. In this space, they seek to carve their place; they build and transform it. They interact with the stage materials, creating symbolic images, “sculptures,” chaos and order.

The play’s soundscapes blend traditional songs with experimental improvisations of modern music, accompanying moments of contemporary narrations. Together, they highlight the timelessness of women’s experiences.

The play “Marikes #notfamouspeople” showcases the uniqueness of every woman who, throughout history, has been sidelined, despite being present in every story within History. It is intended for adult and teenage audiences, aiming to raise awareness and activate viewers on issues of gender inequality.

The production was funded by the  Greek ministry of culture.
