Harpagon is a lonely elderly man who loves his money so much that he ignores his children, the world, and the truth. His greed overwhelms him, and thus he chooses a wealthy older groom for his daughter and a wealthy older bride for his son, while he himself plans to marry a much younger, beautiful woman. In love with others and frustrated by their father’s stinginess, his children devise a heist to shock him into seeing reason and finally changing his ways.Or perhaps not?
The play was written by Molière in the distant 1668 and is a comedy of situations that portray greed, miserliness, and the irrational thinking that these traits can lead a person to. The above themes, combined with those of love, solidarity, resistance, self-organization, and defiance—presented directly or indirectly in the play—concern the adults of the future and provide them with tools for more open-minded thinking.
